Frequently Asked Questions
Squirrels are attracted to many of the same foods that birds enjoy such as sunflower seeds, peanuts, and fruits. If your feeder is easy for them to reach, it is more likely that squirrels will come back.
A squirrel-proof feeder is a good first step. You can also add a squirrel baffle or use hot pepper bird food, which can make your feeder much less appealing to squirrels. Refer to "Keeping Squirrels Away" for guidance.
Squirrels can eat hot pepper bird food, but they generally don't like the heat from capsaicin. Birds don't experience capsaicin the same way mammals do, which is why hot pepper bird food can help discourage squirrels while still allowing birds to feed.
